The world’s people face several immense challenges in the twenty-first century. Among these are global unrest that manifests itself in political and religious extremism; nuclear proliferation and the virtually uncontrolled market in enriched uranium and other radiological substances; and, pervasive and life-threatening environmental degradation.
Most major policymakers, including President Obama, consider global warming (and its menacing spawn – the acidification of our oceans) the most pressing environmental problem of our time. Undoubtedly, global warming is a monumental and existential threat to life as we know it. But most scientists argue that a larger and darker environmental problem looms within our lifetimes – the Sixth Great Extinction.
Scientists warn that the devastating blows we are delivering to the planet’s biosphere (what theologians and naturalists alike refer to as the Creation) can not be sustained any longer.
